It is sometimes said that Border Collies are not suitable as family pets, but this is an unfair generalisation, many border collies settle very happily into home life provided they are included in family activities and considered as a central part of the family.
However there are things to be borne in mind before considering a Border Collie as a pet.

Border collies are exceptionally intelligent and need stimulation and interest to remain mentally healthy and content. A Border collie doomed to spend long hours alone whilst the family are at work or which is exercised with just a stroll to the school gates or a run on the common will be very unhappy. Border collies need things to do which stretch their keen minds and keep them occupied, this is ideal for those who love to do things with their dogs but less satisfactory for those who are looking for a family pet to "go with the flow".
Having a border collie is like having a child, he will want to join in everything you do, all the time, he will demand attention and play up if he does not get it, he will expect you to spend time with him doing what he likes and will pester and fret if you don't. The only real difference between a border collie and a 5 year old child is that you can't sit a border collie in front if the TV for hours and expect him to be entertained.
