Dog Breeding Breeding Border Collies or Golden Retrievers Still want to breed? Breeding good puppies takes care and experience If after considering everything above you still want to breed from your Border Collie or Golden Retriever you will need to contact the breeder of your Border Collie or Golden Retriever dog or bitch and discuss your intentions with her. Remember that since your breeder homed your bitch as a pet and did not keep her to breed on from there may be reasons, that you are unaware of, that would make your bitch unsuitable for breeding. It could also be that in the time since you brought your puppy home, new circumstances have come to light that would make her unsuitable to be bred from, perhaps one or more of her brothers or sisters have developed an inherited disease that would indicate that your bitch is likely to be a carrier. It may also be that your bitch is not a particularly good example of her breed and your breeder should be honest about this. If you are serious about breeding from your bitch you will need to know a great deal about her background and family in order to use an appropriate stud dog., for example, your bitch may be quiet and calm but if all her brothers and sisters are very excitable or hyperactive you will need to chose a calm dog in order to try and minimise the hyperactive qualities in her line being perpetuated. Your breeder will also be able to advise you about which stud dogs she has found to compliment that line, she may have bred from a sister of your bitch and found that a particular stud dog suited (or otherwise) her so that you will have a good idea of what your bitch will produce to the same dog and any problems that may be created. If your breeder is experienced she will be able to help you choose a stud dog avoiding those that are know to produce problems generally or to her line in particular and and if you do mate your bitch she will be able to give advice on her care through pregnancy and through the whelping. She may also be able to help you home your puppies properly. However never lose sight of the fact that no matter how helpful or supportive your breeder may be your bitch and any puppies that you bring into the world are and remain your responsibility and your responsibility alone for their lifetimes. If the breeder of your bitch was herself inexperienced or your bitch was the result of a one off litter you will have no such help and support and you will be on your own with no background information on your bitch or the problems she may produce, in such a circumstance you must ask your self how responsible you would be breeding from her. |
