Good breeding
will seek to fix
type and improve existing qualities
The first question is - why do you
want to breed from your Border Collie or Golden Retriever dog or bitch?
If the answer is that you want a son of daughter of your dog or bitch
so that you can have another dog just like them then you will need to
mate him or her to a dog of complimentary breeding, otherwise the puppies
may be quite different from them in type and character. Below the bitch
is referred to however the points here will apply in equal measure to
a dog. In reality you would be better going back to the breeder of your
bitch and booking a puppy of similar breeding or at least asking your
breeder for advice about which stud dog to use to retain type and character.
Mating your bitch to a dog of different type and temperament will produce
puppies of varying appearance and disposition, a good breeder will spend
a great deal of time researching which lines and which particular dogs
will compliment or improve different characteristics of her bitch. If
you are not prepared to make such an effort you might as well simply
go and buy a new puppy from a good breeder as the offspring of an ill
matched dog and bitch will be unlikely to manifest the better points
of either and may well distill the worst of both. Remember that you
may only want one dog or bitch for yourself but you will in all probability
have somewhere between 2 and 6 other puppies that you will need to home.
