Bringing up Puppy
Play Biting

Dogs can play quite ferociously without hurting each other

An adult dog has about ten times as much power in his jaws as an adult human, dogs also have a much tougher skin.

When dogs play fight with each other they can appear quite ferocious and yet never hurt one an other, if dogs play fight in the same way with people, and especially children, the consequences can be cuts and bruises.

Never encourage a puppy to bite, even in fun, never allow a puppy to bite trouser legs, skirt hems, the sleeves of jumpers or noses, when puppies are allowed to do such things they learn behaviour which is quite unacceptable.

As soon as your puppy tries to grab clothing or fingers or nip feet or ankles show him that you are very cross indeed.

A loud cry, a very loud and angry reprimand and a firm but gentle shake by the scruff of the neck should curtail the activity and make your puppy think again before he repeats the action.

Be consistent, it is no good allowing children to excite the puppy and make a game out of play biting and then getting angry when the puppy does the same thing on another occasion.
